"Stepper" is Guillaume from Paris. When he visited Jamaica in the 1980's he established a lot of contacts which led him to opened vaults at the archives of Sly and Robbie's very own Taxi label. The result is a set of remakes that have a contemporary and historical vibe combined, among which "A Fist Full Of Horns" is just an appetizer.

It started in the 1970's, and in 1992 it sounded like this.

The music is digital, the poet is Yasus Afari. He is keeping up the tradition of DUB Poetry in Jamaica, and he does so from his consciousness as a Rastaman.

WWW, November 2008 - A Video Clip with DUB Poet Linton Kwesie Johnson is kind of rare. When it's played on MTV, it's even more rare.

But here it is!


When LKJ entered the scene, the music that came with his poetry was deep, and hard. DUB effects and everything was there. In fact, it was LKJ's "Five Nights Of Bleeding" that got yours truly hooked on Reggae, somewhere in the early 1980's.

In 1992, the vibe had totally changed. Dennis Bovell, the musical genius behind LKJ, had taken himself and his musicians to higher grounds and they started to experiment with other styles, which they integrated with Reggae.

The result could be an upfull, ska-ish track with Africa style guitar licks.

Like "Di Good Life".

Strong, conscious words form the bulk of Linton Kwesi Johnson's oeuvre. His poetry will go straight to the heart of the matter, whatever angle of downpression and other forms of (social) injustice the mighty DUB Poet will cover.

In this poem, he calls Inglan for what she is.

WWW, September 2007 - Burning Spear and Mutabaruka are both well-known for spreading their Rastafarian message.

In the year 1982, Rub a Dub music was the most popular form of Reggae. But definitely not the only one!

DUB Poetry was already made into a genre of itself, spearheaded by ones like and Mutabaruka. Deep Roots Reggae was well represented by Burning Spear and was -in spite of preterists who like to think Roots is something of the past- not about to go away either.

Burning Spear and Mutabaruka both performed on the Jamaican Reggae Sunsplash festival, the "Mother of all Reggae Festivals" if you will. In this video we are treated with two excellent tracks performed by the two strong vocalists.

WWW, May 2008 - "It's the second time we play here in New York, maybe there's a third time", Mutabaruka says just before he starts to recite his poem The System together with a backing band.

Although it wasn't Mutabaruka who started the discipline of DUB Poetry, he is definitely one of the strongest in the genre. With his poetry based on Rastafari consciousness, and a solid band to lay a musical foundation, there's much more than just a positive musical experience that you can receive when listening to the words.

In the year of George Orwell, Mutabaruka visits New York city and chants down Babylon with the truth once again, just like he keeps doing until this very day in 2008.

Listen to the man called Linton Kwesie Johnson, because he's got a lot to say and he is saying it in a hard dubwize style!

LKJ doesn't sing, and he doesn't rap, he is a poet from the city of London and he recites his poems over some of the hardest dub riddims ever laid down.

The Legendary Dennis "Blackbeard" Bovell and his band is responsible for this monument of black music that will thrill you to the bones, I guarantee!

This is the sound of the crying sufferer: Hard reality of today comes through your speakers as Linton introduces you to the blackman's suffering in modern day Babylon.

As heavy as the basslines are LKJ's accusations against the police, government, and the sufferers themselves. Although he is not a Rasta this is a Black Consciousness Reggae Album from the first degree.

It is the 2nd track called five night of bleeding that made me hooked on reggae and especially dub. This happened back then in 1981 and this album is still among my favorites! Dread beat and blood is Linton's debut album, I consider it his best.

You can find his music in several collections that consist of only essential albums. It is one of the first in the genre that is now know as "dub poetry".

Like U Roy is to be considered the godfather of toast, Linton Kwesie Johnson must be credited as the godfather of dub poetry. Dread Beat And Blood: consider this to be your next purchase!
