WWW, June 2011 - San Martino di Campagna, Italy. It's December 2010 and the Alambic Conspiracy DUB Studio is settling down in this new location, north of Venice. When everything is put in place, some older recording pop up: the Missing DUB Versions. With names like BR Stylers and Zion Train to name just two, these DUB Versions have fortunately now been found. Sixteen DUB Versions, that is!

The outstanding work on The Missing DUB Versions is not just found in the incredible riddims that serve as the foundation found on this album. It's equally, perhaps even more, in the art of DUB mixing applied. Most of the things are done in a stricktly old skool tradition of analogue effects and mixing board. Remarkable, when you realize that most of the work was done during the last three years.

Even more remarkable is the fact that according to the conspirators themselves, none of these tracks were ever intended for release. Why that would be, is a question to most: even for the collective themselves. It's truly a very interesting exposition of old skool methodology on new skool Euro and UK Roots Reggae riddims.

From the top to the very last drop, the album continues to have this special vibe. Given the fact that the tracks were recorded by a variety of musicians and studio's, a noteworthy point. The Alambic Conspiracy knows who to mix their DUB and this album will show it to every self respecting lover of the better contemporary DUB.

WWW, June 2011 - Hailing from Sao Paulo, Dubalizer knows how to make some very interesting mixes in which he takes the concept of Dub as his guideline, while kind of taking straight back to the source those techniques that derived from DUB.

Unfortunately, In Transe does only contain three tracks. These three tracks all have their own specific vibe and style even though everything is undoubtly coming from the same producer. From the magnificent opening track to the heartically voiced middle one to the more Dubstep orientated closing tune, this is more than interesting to listen to.

WWW, January 2011 - Taken from the album "Walt Rides Again" which is available from sites like amazon.com, "Life (It Na Funny)" is an excellent DUB track in the ROOTS tradition, with full-blown horns and a massive drum and bass line. The Neophytes, who have been around long enough to be among the Experienced, team up with vocalist Errol Judah in what can only be described as a must-have for your ever growing collection of free and legal MP3 files.
The Dub mixing is excellent, there are enough parts with lyrical content to guarantee the conscious aspect while the instruments in their turn form a perfect input for the echo machine and reverberation device. Life is not funny for the sufferers, but music make them help through in that mystical way which is perfectly captured in the (free and legal) release. Consider purchasing the album, more than worth it!

Book Review: The Rough Guide To Reggae (Barrow and Dalton)

There are many books that claim to be the definite source on Reggae Music. So many, that we don't take such claims seriously anymore.

And because the music under continual development, it's even logically impossible to create a definitive guide. We're not talking just about a music from the past, or do we? So yeah, we have reasons to be skeptical and even cynical when it comes to "Guides to Reggae".

So, what about the Rough Guide To Reggae? After all, on the cover we find claims how the book is supposed to be a "definite guide" as well.

The first hint might be to look at the names of the authors. Especially Steve Barrow stands out, as he is the main man behind the legendary label Blood and Fire.

This label re-issues classic Reggae Recordings. Through the grapevine, we heard how one well known Jamaican artist (Yabby You) privately speaks very highly about Blood and Fire.

They know how to respect Reggae Music and even better, they know how to respect Reggae Musicians!

And so, the question is: does the Rough Guide To Reggae have the same mentality and respect as we find in Blood and Fire's products?

Well, as a matter of fact, we think it does.

In eleven chapters and almost 500 pages, Steve Barrow and Peter Dalton take us to the wonderful and interesting world of Reggae.

They don't only tell the essential history of Jamaica's music in a chronological manner, most contemporary genres and developments have their attention as well. Certain styles and studios, artists and producers are highlighted in special articles.

There are hundreds of reviews, but they are all accompanied by in-depth analysis which places the reviews in a certain perspective and context.

It's an encyclopedia, a history book, a tool to create an interesting Reggae collection. It's an essential in the book case of every serious reviewer of Reggae Music.

But no, it's not the definitive guide. That can't be. For Reggae is still under development.

But it's definitely the definitive guide for Reggae so far.

From the production to the musical playing, from the vocals to the actual lyrics, ARISE is more than recommended to lovers of (DUB) Roots Reggae.

Massive!

He's not new on the scene, both online and offline: Gavin Sand, or Fullness as we all (should) know him. Yes, indeed; this is a name not to be ignored. Excellent musical playing, crucial production overall but -arguably- even more important: Dubwise of the quality we all love to experience here, as true lovers of the D-word.

Izyah Davis adds more than just vocals to the excellent production: in an obvious good vibrational interaction with Fullness, he raises his voice up high to the Most High. From the top to the very last drop, we are being treated with some spiritual food that no righteous rootsman would ever be able to deny.

Chanting down Babylon and her iniquity, lifting up the Trinity to the fullness, calling on the people and the so-called leaders, this one is -as said- more than recommended to lovers of (DUB) Roots Reggae.

WWW, September 28 2010 - "Set Him Free" is a powerful track by the Connecticut-based Jamaican singer Pappa Biggy, created in 2009 when the news broke on Buju Banton's arrest in Florida on cokane charges. After almost nine months of being in jail, Buju Banton was finally put before a judge and jury, who could not come to a verdict with the result that a new trial is set for December. That's when Buju Banton will then be in jail for a year. 

Pappa Biggy graciously gave the Dubroom permission to upload the track.
